Build Your Own Box: Complete Overview

In a world where personalization drives purchasing decisions, giving customers the ability to curate their own product bundles can be a game-changer. The Build Your Own Box (Bundle Builder) allows shoppers to mix and match items based on their preferences—whether it's choosing favorite flavors, assembling themed gift sets, or crafting the perfect outfit. This interactive shopping experience not only delights customers but also boosts average order value and reduces product returns.

From picking out a custom toy box filled with games, crafts, and surprises to designing a personalized spa gift set with soaps, lotions, and candles—the Build Your Own Box tool transforms a standard shopping journey into a fun, engaging experience tailored to individual needs.

Use Case: Build Your Own Box for Personalized Shopping

Offering a Build Your Own Box option helps merchants stand out in a crowded market by:

  • Enhancing customer experience: Shoppers love having control and flexibility. Customizing their bundles makes the purchase more meaningful and satisfying.

  • Increasing average order value (AOV): Strategic bundle discounts encourage customers to buy more to unlock savings.

  • Reducing inventory waste: Promote underperforming items by including them in bundle choices.

  • Improving customer retention: A personalized experience keeps customers coming back for more.

  • Creating upsell opportunities: Suggest premium options within bundles to boost revenue.

Key Features of the Bundle Builder

Here are the standout capabilities that make this feature so effective:

  • Flexible Product Grouping: Choose how products are grouped—by category (e.g., games, crafts), product type (e.g., tops, bottoms), or occasion (e.g., birthdays, holidays).

  • Item Limits & Requirements: Set rules like “Pick 3 games, 2 crafts & 1 surprise toy” to guide customers through the selection process.

  • Automatic Discounts: Apply bundle pricing (e.g., 15% off or buy 6 and save) when a customer meets specific selection criteria.

  • Dynamic Preview: Show customers what’s in their box as they build it, keeping the experience transparent and interactive.

  • Inventory Syncing: Real-time inventory updates ensure that only available products are shown and prevent overselling.

  • Mobile-Optimized Design: Seamless shopping experience across all devices, especially important for mobile-first shoppers.

Now that you understand what the Build Your Own Box (Bundle Builder) is and why it’s beneficial, let’s walk through how you can set it up.

Step 1: Select the Build Your Own Box Bundle

  1. Navigate to the Kefi Upsells dashboard.

  2. Go to either the All category or the Bundle Builder category.

  3. Find the Build Your Own Box option and click Select to begin setting up your bundle.

Step 2: Access the Bundle Builder Setup Sections

After selecting Build Your Own Box, you’ll be taken to the setup screen, which includes three main sections:

  • Content – Add bundle info, configure steps, set discounts, and customize text fields.

  • Design – Customize the look and feel of your bundle widget.

  • Advanced – Manage bundle visibility, upload bundle images, set scheduling, and apply customer targeting rules.

A live widget preview appears on the right side of the screen, so you can instantly see how your changes will appear to customers.

Content Tab:

1. Bundle Info

Add a clear and engaging title for your box. This title will appear on the review step of your bundle builder screen, so make it both descriptive and enticing to encourage completion..

Example: “Make Your Own Toy Box” or “Build Your Custom Gift Set

2. Configure Step

Now it’s time to define the structure of your bundle by creating steps for customers to follow.

Step 1: Add Step Info

Start by setting up the first step in your bundle flow. This typically represents a product category or choice group (e.g., "Choose Your Games").

You'll need to fill in the following fields:

  • Step Label – The name of the step shown to customers (e.g., Step 1: Choose Your Games).

  • Page Title (Optional) – A more detailed heading displayed at the top of the step page, if needed.

  • Widget Icon – Upload an icon to visually represent this step (helps guide users through the selection process).

Products and Fields

After setting up your step info, you can choose between two options for each step: Products and Fields. Add products your customers can choose from, or use fields to collect custom input such as text, selections, or preferences..

Add Products

  1. Under the Add Product section, choose the product source:

    • Specific Products – Manually select individual products.

    • Collection – Pull products dynamically from a specific collection.

  2. In this example, we’re using the Specific Products option:

    • Click Add Product.

    • Search for and select the products you want to include in this step of the box.

Add Fields

You can add custom fields to collect extra information from your customers—like personalized messages, gift notes, or special instructions.

Custom Field 1: Add a Message Field

  1. Click on Add Field.

  2. Choose the Field Type:

    • Text Field – For short, single-line inputs (e.g., name, short message).

  3. Enter the following details:

    • Field Title – This will appear as the label (e.g., Add a gift message).

    • Placeholder Text – Guide customers with example text

Set Step Conditions

Step conditions let you control how many products a customer can or must select within this step. This helps guide the bundle-building process and ensures the bundle meets your requirements.

You can set one or both of the following conditions:

  • Minimum Products from This Step – Set the minimum number of products a customer must choose to proceed.

  • Maximum Products from This Step – Set the maximum number of products a customer can choose in this step.

Add More Steps (If Needed)

If your bundle includes multiple product categories or selection stages, you can easily add more steps.

To do this:

  • Click on the Add Step button.

  • Repeat the same process:

    • Set the Step Label, Page Title (optional), and Widget Icon.

    • Add Products, configure any Fields, and set Step Conditions as needed.

Review Step

To give customers a final chance to review their selections before checkout, you can enable the Review Step.

Here’s how to set it up:

  • Review Label – Add a short label that will appear in the navigation (e.g., Review Your Box).

  • Page Title (Optional) – Add a more detailed title for the review page (e.g., Here’s What You’ve Picked!).
