Customizing Your Abandoned Cart Message: Best Practices

Abandoned cart messages are one of the most effective tools for re-engaging shoppers and recovering lost sales. But simply reminding someone that they left something behind isn’t enough—your message needs to feel personal, timely, and compelling.

In our app, you have two options to engage customers who abandoned their cart:

  • Manual Messages: Create and send a personalized message yourself using a manual template.

  • Automated Messages: Create a message template via your Facebook Business account, submit it for Meta approval, and once approved, it will be sent automatically to customers who abandon their cart.

Whether you're sending messages manually or setting up automation, the best results come from using proven strategies. Below are key best practices to help you write abandoned cart messages that actually convert.

Best Practices for Customizing Abandoned Cart Messages

1. Use a Clear and Friendly Tone

Speak like a helpful assistant, not a salesperson. Use a conversational, friendly tone that matches your brand voice.

Example:

"Hey there! We noticed you left a few things behind. Still thinking it over? Let us know if you have any questions!"

2. Mention the Abandoned Item(s)

Whenever possible, include product details—like the name, image, or price—to remind the customer what they were interested in. This visual cue increases the likelihood they’ll return.

Manual Message Tip: When sending manually, copy the product name and image from your admin panel or website and include it in the message.

Automated Message Tip: Your approved template can include dynamic variables (e.g., product name or price) if supported by Meta’s API. Be sure to configure this in your template.

3. Add a Call-to-Action (CTA)

Tell the customer exactly what to do next—like “Complete your purchase” or “Return to your cart.” Use buttons or links that make it easy to act.

Example:

"Your cart is just a click away 👇

[Complete My Purchase]"

4. Create a Sense of Urgency (But Be Honest)

Encourage the shopper to act sooner rather than later by mentioning low stock or limited-time offers—without sounding pushy or misleading.

Example:

"Only a few left in stock—grab yours before it’s gone!"

5. Offer an Incentive (If Applicable)

If you’re willing to offer a discount or free shipping, this can be a great motivator.

Example:

"Still thinking it over? Here's 10% off your order—just use code CART10 at checkout!"

Note: Don’t use incentives in your automated Meta message unless your template is approved with such content. Meta has strict guidelines on promotional language.

6. Include Support Contact Info

Make it easy for the customer to reach out if they have a question or ran into an issue during checkout.

Example:

"Need help checking out? Just reply to this message—we’re here for you!"

7. Keep It Short and Mobile-Friendly

Most users will read your message on their phone. Keep the message brief, punchy, and easy to skim. Break longer sentences into short paragraphs.

8. Timing Matters

For manual messages, try to send them within 1–2 hours after cart abandonment while the intent is still fresh.

For automated messages, you can set a delay that feels natural (e.g., 30 minutes to 1 hour after abandonment).

9. Test Different Templates

Don’t rely on just one message. Try different versions—change up your CTA, tone, or timing—and see what gets the best response.

Setting Up Your Automated Message Template (Quick Recap)

To create an automated abandoned cart message:

  1. Log in via your Facebook Business account.

  2. Go to the Automated Abandoned Carts section in our app.

  3. Create your message and submit it for Meta approval.

  4. Once approved, your template will automatically be sent to customers who abandon their cart.

Make sure your message complies with Meta’s policies to avoid rejection. Avoid overly promotional language and follow formatting guidelines.
